How are responses to negatively worded questions displayed in reports?

Reports focus on the percent of participants who report positive experiences. This ensures that higher numbers are always “good” across all report metrics. If a question is worded such that agreement implies a negative experience, then the responses to that question are reverse-coded, i.e., participants must “Disagree” or “Strongly Disagree” with the negatively worded question in order for their experience to be considered positive.

 

For example, consider the statement “People here would be surprised if I, or someone like me, did well in this class.” Agreement with that statement would imply that the participant is not experiencing identity safety. Therefore, they would have to respond “Disagree” or “Strongly Disagree” in order for their response to be considered positive.
