The Elevate survey questions have been validated with students in grades 5 and higher. However, some teachers have had positive experiences using Elevate in 4th grade classrooms. You should only use Elevate with younger students if you fully understand the associated limitations and responsibilities:
Students younger than 5th grade can have a hard time understanding the Elevate survey questions. If you want to use Elevate with younger students, be prepared to do extra work to help students understand the questions and feel comfortable answering the questions honestly.
Take care when interpreting results. For example, you can use cognitive pretesting techniques to see how your students understand the questions. If students consistently misinterpret certain questions, adjust your Elevate survey to skip those questions.
